Montgomery's Holiday Season Now Builds Toward One Saturday in December

The events page on Visit Montgomery Texas lists the Montgomery Quilt Walk as a four-day event from Thursday, October 16 to Sunday, October 19. It puts downtown Trick or Treat on Saturday, October 26, and ends the year with a Snow Party after the Christmas parade on Saturday, December 13. None of those dates has a year next to it, and they read as a carryover from an earlier season. The City of Montgomery's 2026 notices give different dates.

The 2026 season is also a different shape from the one that page describes. The City has removed several of the smaller family events that filled out past calendars. What's left is a short list of fall dates that leads up to one full Saturday downtown, December 12. That day is shared by two organizers who run separate programs on the same streets.

What the City cut from the calendar

In a City of Montgomery budget-planning packet for fiscal 2026, three events appear under the heading "Events being removed from the calendar and budget moving forward fy' 2026":

  • Montgomery Water Party
  • Montgomery Snow Party
  • Movie Night at the Park

All three still appear on the tourism page's annual list. It lists Movie Night at Cedar Brake Park on several dates, including October 11 and November 1. It lists the Snow Party for 1 to 4 p.m. on parade day, right after the procession. We found no 2026 date for the Snow Party or for a fall Movie Night in any City source. The packet points the other way. If your family planned the December parade around snow in the afternoon, that half of the day has no confirmed event behind it this year.

The City kept its core lineup: the Quilt Walk, Trick or Treat, the Lone Star Street Dance, Light Up the Park and the Christmas parade. Each has a 2026 notice on montgomerytexas.gov, and every date below comes from those notices.

The 2026 dates, from October to December

The table compares what the tourism page shows with what the City has published for this year.

Event Tourism page shows City's 2026 date and hours
Montgomery Quilt Walk Thu Oct 16 – Sun Oct 19 Fri Oct 16 – Sat Oct 17, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. each day
Downtown Trick or Treat Sat Oct 26, 1–4 p.m. Sat Oct 31, 2–6 p.m.
Lone Star Street Dance Nov 8 Sat Nov 7, 6:30–10 p.m.
Light Up the Park Fri Dec 6, 6–8 p.m. Sat Dec 5, 6–8 p.m.
Christmas parade Sat Dec 13, 10 a.m.–noon Sat Dec 12, 10 a.m.–noon

The Quilt Walk is this coming Friday and Saturday. It's two days this year, not four, and there's no Sunday. The City presents it, and its September 24 notice asked quilters, makers, vendors and volunteers to help stage it downtown. The City hasn't published a list of host buildings or a theme.

Trick or Treat lands on Halloween this year. It runs 2 to 6 p.m. in the Downtown Business District, so it starts an hour later and ends two hours later than the 1 to 4 p.m. window on the tourism page.

October 31 is also a deadline. Registration for the City's Light Up Montgomery decorating contest, which has residential and commercial categories, opened September 3 and closes October 31. City pages give conflicting judging dates, so check with the City before you plan when to have your lights on. The recognition date is firm. Winners are announced at Light Up the Park on Saturday, December 5. That's why a contest that closes in October is really part of the December calendar.

The Lone Star Street Dance on Saturday, November 7, from 6:30 to 10 p.m., is the season's only evening event downtown before December. The City's notice and calendar don't name a band and don't list street closures or parking plans.

December 12 is two events on the same streets

The tourism page lists the Christmas parade as a City event with a Snow Party after it. The 2026 version is bigger and has two sets of hosts. The City's own parade notice explains the arrangement:

"On Saturday, December 12, 2026, the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery Historical Society are proud to collaborate in creating a full day of Christmas festivities in Historic Downtown Montgomery. While we work together to make this a memorable community celebration, each event has its own organizer and separate registration process."

The City runs the Lone Star Christmas Parade. The Montgomery Historical Society runs Christmas in Historic Montgomery, which this year carries the theme "Lone Star Christmas." Parade entries register with the City. Marketplace vendors register through the Montgomery Historical Society. If you're entering a float, a booth or both, you'll file two separate registrations.

The Historical Society's 2026 press release lists three parts to its day. Put them alongside the parade and you get this schedule:

  1. 9 a.m. The Holiday Marketplace Arts & Crafts Sale opens on the grounds around the Old Community Center Building, 14420 Liberty Street. Vendors sell handmade items, holiday décor, gifts and home accents. It runs until 5 p.m.
  2. 10 a.m. to noon. The City's Lone Star Christmas Parade runs through Historic Downtown Montgomery.
  3. 11 a.m. The 36th Annual Cookie Walk opens inside the Old Community Center at Liberty and College Street. Decorated cookies and candies sell for $10 per pound. It closes at 4 p.m. or when everything is sold, whichever comes first.
  4. 4 to 7 p.m. The 49th Annual Candlelight Home Tour leads walkers by luminaria through decorated historic churches, homes and landmarks. Every home at Fernland Historical Park is open this year.

Fitting the parade, the cookies and the tour into one day

Most of the timing depends on one building. The Old Community Center hosts both the Marketplace outside and the Cookie Walk inside, so a morning on Liberty Street covers two of the day's three Historical Society events. The Cookie Walk opens at 11, while the parade is still on. Because it closes when the cookies run out, the 4 p.m. closing time isn't guaranteed. The Montgomery Monarchs Chapter of the National Charity League spends days decorating and staging the room, according to the Historical Society.

The afternoon is mostly empty. Past calendars filled it with the Snow Party, and the City's budget packet has dropped it. That leaves the Marketplace, open until 5, as the main daytime draw after noon. The day ends with the Candlelight Home Tour. It runs from 4 to 7 p.m., into the evening, along a route marked by luminarias.

Tour tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students, and children four and under get in free. The Historical Society sends people to mhs-tx.org for tickets and details. This is the 49th year of the tour. Having every Fernland Historical Park home open is what the Historical Society singles out as this year's highlight.

Light Up the Park is one week earlier, on Saturday, December 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cedar Brake Park. Taken together, December runs like this. The City lights the tree and names the contest winners on the first Saturday. On the second Saturday, the City parade and the Historical Society's daylong program share downtown. The Water Party, Snow Party and Movie Night are gone from the City's plans. Before December, the City's calendar holds three dates: the Quilt Walk, Trick or Treat and the Street Dance.

Planning the holidays around Montgomery's calendar is the same kind of timing problem our team handles every week for listings, showings and closings. If you're hosting family for December 12, or wondering how a December listing would line up with the busiest weekends downtown, The Jamie Bechtold Group can go over the dates with you.
